Gives you the opportunity to:

    • You pick which Explorations you want to attend.
    •  Each is a small group experience with a working professional in the field
  • Try your hand at different careers, by engaging in hands-on activities
    • Most Explorations will include an interactive portion of the program

Chris Pietsch

Chris Pietsch has been a photojournalist for newspapers around the northwest for over 30 years. He has worked at the Moscow Daily News, The Lewiston Morning Tribune and has worked at The Register-Guard for the past 25 years.

As a photographer for the local newspaper, Pietsch has photographed a wide range of stories from local news and community events to national and international assignments.

He is married to Theresé Brubaker and they have two chidden, Tiernan, a junior in high school and Delaney who is a freshman. Both girls attend The Academy of Arts and Academics in Springfield.

Todd Edman

CEO Todd Edman is allergic to neckties. The environment that he has created at Lunar Logic LLC is one of innovation and creativity. It's a fine balance between utilizing what already works and discovering a better way to do business..

A Native of Eugene, Oregon, Edman attended both the University of Portland and the University of Oregon, and continues to be an avid supporter of his beloved Ducks.
Edman helped pioneer a software database repair program through Symantec, has owned and managed a software development firm in New York City where he wrote software for Chase Manhattan Bank, and even toured as a rock musician throughout the West Coast.
More recently, he worked for a Fortune 500 company developing Credit Union software until he had the opportunity to join the team at Lunar Logic. Initially, Edman was a Senior Programmer for the long-time Eugene firm before being promoted to Chief Operating Officer. He assumed the role of CEO in August of 2008 and purchased the firm to become its sole owner.
Todd Edman is no stranger to locally owned business. His family has owned Edman Fine Furniture for over 50 years.

Mark Lewis

Mark Lewis is first and foremost a storyteller.  His more than 40 years of professional experience have won him two Emmy awards and a guest spot on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.  He is also an actor with several films and national commercials to his credit as well as most recently having been a featured performer on the hit series Leverage and Grimm. Just a few of the clients who have used his narration and voice-over skills  include ABC Television, Walt Disney Imagineering, The Oregon Festival of American Music and the Oregon Bach Festival. Mark’s talents include being a Professional Teaching Artist and he has worked in schools all across Oregon, Washington, Nevada and California. He is currently Adjunct Faculty at The University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication.

Come and hear how two local carpenters began their careers in construction ultimately owning or managing a medium sized local construction company.
Steve and Tim began their construction careers in the early 1970’s going through the Oregon State Carpentry Apprenticeship Program. They worked together for many years for local construction companies honing their skills and learning project management. 

In the early 1990’s Steve started Dorman Construction Company. In the late 1990’s after returning from working in Portland Tim Joined Dorman Construction and eventually became Vice President of the Mausoleum Division. 

Dorman Construction is a medium sized local construction company with a focus on Hospital, School, Cemetery, and general commercial work.
Come catch a glimpse of the construction industry and build a small wood project to take with you.

Federal Law Enforcement: FBI

Talk with a Special Agent with eleven years experience in organized crime, gangs/violent crime, public corruption and international terrorism 
and an Intelligence Analyst with 11 years experience in the US Intelligence Community, working large international drug investigations, organized crime/gang investigations and national security matters.  

We’ll talk about what the FBI is, our backgrounds and how we got our jobs, what the FBI does locally and around the world, how we work with other agencies, specialized jobs within the FBI (Evidence collection, SWAT, WMD response…) and we’ll take a look at some of the equipment used by the FBI today.

Nutritional Therapy Practitioner/Herbalist

Born and raised in New York, Yaakov has made his home in Oregon since 1998. He brings his passion for healthy nutrition and herbal medicine to his practice as a Nutritional Therapist and Herbalist. 

Yaakov is an avid researcher and writer. He has a healthy lifestyle column in the weekly Springfield Times and Creswell Chronicle. He also writes for the quarterly Take Root – Willamette Valley and the Price-Pottenger Nutritional Foundation’s Journal and blog. Yaakov has been published in The Well Being Journal and in the Nutritional Therapist Newsletter.

As a Nutritional Therapist, Yaakov uses his knowledge, listening skills and a variety of assessment tools to support his clients' goals of optimum health. As a cancer survivor, he brings empathy and insights to his work with his clients as they address their health challenges.

Bio: I have been in the banking industry for 19 years-4 of those years with a bank and 15 year with the Credit Union.  I began my career as a teller, moved into a loan officer for personal accounts, then for business accounts, and became a Branch Manager after 4 years of being at OCCU.  I manage two branches with a total of 24 employees.  

Presentation key points to include:
Difference between a credit union and a bank
Community discussion-how the banking industry can help (or hinder) a community’s success
What types of positions are available through a credit union e.g. marketing, IT, Risk assessment, mortgage, data analyst, etc…
What subjects in school can benefit your career in banking
What skills are typically required and what will help you be promoted
Q&A session

A Note to Parents
Exploring Clubs are all about “Challenge by Choice”.  The Explorer Clubs offer an array of interactions with professionals from across several career fields, including Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Your student can choose to attend as many or few Explorations as desired.
A Note to Educators
With increased interest in career exploration, due to the Department of Education’s focus on the sixteen career clusters at the middle school level, the National Exploring office has created new and innovative co-educational Middle School Explorer Club programs for students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades.
This program will help students in working towards their Personalized Learning Goals:
  • Educational Planning and Profile
  • Career-Related Learning Experiences
  • Extended Application of Skills
