Show Your Support - “Join Scouting”
Yard Sign Brigade
Oregon Trail Council needs your help. Help promote Scouting this Fall by putting a “Join Scouting” yard sign in your yard or at your business. Our combined efforts can have a great impact.
Signs are available at the council office, through your district executive or by emailing Chris Otto: cotto@otcbsa.org. Put “Yard Sign Brigade” in the subject line. Be sure to include your name and phone number so that we can arrange delivery. Join the yard sign brigade!
BeAScout.org Ready to Launch
A new BeAScout campaign is ready to launch and unit leaders are in the driver’s seat to invite more boys to Scouting than ever before.
BeAScout helps parents and volunteers locate packs, troops and crews nearest to them and request information about Scouting in their community. Interested families simply go to www.BeAScout.org and type in their home address. Once done, a Google map will list and show them current Scouting units close to home (your unit pin).
Unit leaders have an important task. We need you to populate your unit so the most useful information shows up on a Google map (your unit pin).
Cubmasters, Scoutmasters, Crew advisors, committee chairs or chartered partner representatives should go to MyScouting.org and select BeAScout from the unit tools section on the left. (You’ll need a MyScouting account first.) There are two options:
1. Unit Pin Management - Unit leaders use this to edit pin information (customize your pin). 2. Unit Lead Management – Used to manage incoming requests for information from parents interested in Scouting.
Unit leaders, give it a try. In August, the council will populate all units with generic information. Here’s your chance to customize your pin so nearby families have the most current and accurate information.
Help Promote Scouting
The Register Guard Newspaper will be featuring Oregon Trail Council and Scouting's Centennial in its August 15th Oregon Life section. We can use any great photographs you have of Scouts and Scouting activities as well as any historical information you think readers would find interesting. Please email them directly to Mike Quirk at mquirk@otcbsa.org by July 31st.
Camp Melakwa Weekend Camping
Help save the Council thousands of dollars in federal forest lease fees by taking your troop, team or crew to Camp Melakwa this summer or fall for a weekend of camping adventure.
Oregon Trail Council pays the Forest Service an annual lease which is reduced by the number of users so it is important to get Scouts and leaders using Camp Melakwa, even if they are not camping there for summer camp.
Camp Melakwa is an outstanding site for weekend camping with a great lake to fish, trails to hike and makes a great base camp for more high adventure treks.
Complete a weekend camping form and submit it to the council office (2525 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Eugene, Oregon 97401). Plan now to help reduce our annual lease and give your Scouts an exciting weekend (or day trip).

Summer Planning will help get your Pack’s Fall Kick-off ready to launch!
Downtime in the summer is a great time for Pack leaders to take a deep breath, regroup, assess the pack’s situation, and plan for great Fall and beyond. Your district executive has great resources to help with this planning. Call 541-485-4433, or your DE to get connected. Important things to consider:
Ø What leaders are returning? Who would be good to fill vacant positions? Make a chart to show all parents
Ø Who in the Pack can help mentor the new Tiger Den and Tiger leader?
Ø Compile Pack and Den dates into a calendar. Include other Pack activities and events. Include important council training dates (i.e. Oct. 23 Program Development Conference ) and events (i.e. Fun With Son Weekends Sept 24-26/Oct 8-10).
Ø Develop a budget and set fundraising goals.
Ø What is the new family recruiting plan? School newsletters, distributing flyers, yard signs, Back to School night booth, etc. Who is going to do what and how can the council help with resources and support?
Each of the districts will hold a special Fall Kickoff where resources, information and training will be offered. Attend your local event to learn more about:
• Fall Round Up resources available to your pack • Best methods for recruiting boys • “New Cub Scout Program Delivery Method”--Cub Scouts 2010 • Be A Scout (beascout.org) media, marketing, and internet campaign • Fall events and trainings

2010 Sporting Clay Shootout
The birds have all been shot and the prizes all delivered. The Cottage Grove/Eugene Sportsman’s Club was a terrific host and Dr. Steve Wilhite and Dennis Crowell set a great course for our shooters. Fun was had by all and everyone is looking forward to next year’s even bigger and better event. Becky Hansen from Cascade District did a great job preparing and serving our lunch, right on time. We had 40 Shooters, and 24 volunteers from Cascade and Greenwood Districts. BIG Thanks to all of our volunteers.
This year we added a couple of new elements, the Corporate Cup Perpetual Trophy and a Prize Drawing. Both were strong additions. This year’s winner of the Corporate Cup and the Team 1st place Trophy was the team from Peterson Cat, and they will be back next year to defend their title. Our individual winner was determined by a Shoot-out between Ron Mecklenberg and Paul Tragis, both of whom scored 99 (out of a possible 100), and the winner was Paul Tragis. What an exciting end to the competition.
We hope to double our shooters next year and schedule the event for the Saturday of Father’s day weekend. We will also be looking to expand our Sponsors and Prize Drawing Donor list as well. If you know anyone who would like to join us next year, please have them contact Rex Starr (541) 284-4394 or Crystal Mischel (541) 284-4391 and we will put them (or you) on our mailing list now to make sure you get all the pre-event communications.
2010 Popcorn Sale

This year’s “Show and Sell / Show and Deliver” method will greatly increase your unit sales and income. It is similar to other product sales. Popcorn is ordered in advance and sold in front of stores, banks, churches and any other public venue. This Show and Sell portion of the sale will feature only the microwave and caramel corn products to make it even simpler. The full product selection will be available on the Take Order forms. Be sure to attend your district kick-off this summer to learn “best practices” to increase your sale.
At your district kick-off you will receive a Popcorn Sale in a Box. The box includes product samples, posters, banners, training DVDs, a leader playbook, the ever popular/exciting Marshmallow Crossbow and more, all designed to improve your sales and FUN!!
You can improve your commission by identifying your unit Popcorn Kernel, signing up early, planning your Scout year and attending the kick-off. Call your District Executive to sign up, or sign your unit up now and take advantage of the incentives by clicking here.

10 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT SCOUTING
1. Former Congressmen Alan Simpson and Norman Mineta served together from the mid-1970s to the late 1990s. They met as Boy Scouts during World War II, when Simpson’s troop from Cody, Wyoming, visited the internment camp where Mineta and his Japanese immigrant parents were being held. The two became – and have remained – close friends and political allies. 2. At age 12, Seattle Mariners’ Chairman and CEO Howard Lincoln posed for Norman Rockwell’s painting The Scoutmaster. 3. Scouts collected more than 1 million tons of litter on Scouting Keep America Beautiful Day in 1971. 4. At his family’s request, two separate honor guards of Eagle Scouts played a major role in the 2006 memorial services for President Gerald R. Ford, the first U. S. president to achieve the Eagle Scout rank as a boy. 5. A young George Herman “Babe” Ruth was a Tenderfoot Scout in Troop 23, promising to do a Good Turn daily. 6. In 1927, the BSA created Honorary Scouts to distinguish “American citizens whose achievements in outdoor activity, exploration, and worthwhile adventure are of such an exceptional character as to capture the imagination of boys.” Among the Honorary Scouts were Orville Wright and Charles Lindbergh. 7. The BSA is eco-friendly! In addition to publishing the first “green” Boy Scouts Handbook in 2009, BSA magazines Boys’ Life and Scouting have been certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. 8. A Boy Scout was selected to read Abraham Lincoln’s address at the 50th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Gettysburg in 1913, one of among several national notices the BSA received that year. 9. When Orville Wright wrote how he and his brother Wilbur got to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, for the first engine-powered airplane flight, only Boys’ Life printed “How I Learned to FLY.” 10. The Boy Scout Handbook has had Braille editions for many years; merit badge pamphlets have been recorded on cassette tapes for the blind; and closed-caption training videos have been produced for those who are deaf.
