Greenwood Scouters –
What do over 200 boys wearing orange t-shirts have in common with bugs, birds, BBs and baked muffin pizzas? Cub Day Camp, of course! Shaded from the summer sun by tall oak trees, these young guys enjoyed a great time following the camp theme of Cub Scout Investigators (CSI). Debbie Bauer organized a terrific first week of activities, to be followed by a second week under the guiding eye of Jeanni Cuthbertson. The outdoor fun Cubs have at these camps is just an introduction to the adventure that awaits them as they grow in Scouting.
To help Greenwood units spread the word about the merits of Scouting and to encourage more families to participate in our programs, Tali Bonine is already making plans for Fall Round Up. We intend to promote the benefits of Scouting through more media exposure, and to have a coordinated outreach effort. So start thinking about your own recruiting opportunities, and make plans to attend the Kick-Off session on Wednesday, August 4 at the OTC Scout Service Center.
(That meeting will take the place of August Round Table.)
Randy Hill, Rob MacLuan and I are inviting all Cubmasters, Scoutmasters and Unit Committee Chairs to join us on Tuesday, August 31, to review Greenwood District plans for 2010/2011. This will be a short but important get-together beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Scout Center to get us all moving in the same direction.
As Scouters, we have an obligation to provide a safe environment for Scouts at all times. In addition to the safety aspects associated with outdoor activities, the BSA has a Youth Protection Policy that prescribes adult-to-youth behavioral expectations. All registered adult volunteers are required to participate in Youth Protection training, and you’ll need a current, i.e., within the last two years, training certificate in order to register this fall. See OTCBSA.ORG/YP for scheduled sessions. You can also complete the training on-line as I did – it takes about a half hour, and provides a common sense approach to implementing the policy.
Care to share memories of your own Scouting adventures? The Eugene Register Guard would like to hear from you for a feature story they are writing for BSA’s 100th Anniversary. Send your short story (photos, too) along with your name, age, phone number, address to mj@registerguard.com. Deadline is July 26.
Two Scouts must have stories to tell because they are the latest to attain the rank of Eagle - Justin Altmiller of Troop 282 and Michael Ambrose of Troop 61. Congratulations!
