Greenwood Scouts and Scouters –
Have you noticed that daylight seems to be lasting a little longer every day? (Notice that I said “daylight” and not “sunshine”!) Before we know it, Daylight Savings Time will be here (March 14), and then summer will be upon us! Better finalize those plans for camp and other outings!
At our last District Committee meeting we put together the district calendar for the remainder of 2010. Watch for it soon on the council’s website. At our next meeting, we’ll work on the 2011 calendar. We hope that units will find this information helpful in planning their own activities.
Some big “thank yous” are in order. Troop 100 did a fantastic job recently with the Merit Badge Fair. I saw lots of Scouts paying attention to what their counselors were saying. What a tremendous opportunity that was for advancement and exploration of interesting subjects.
A special word of thanks goes to Debra Bauer and Bryan Phillips for their service as District Commissioners of the Applegate and Evergreen Districts. Commissioners are the critical link between units and the helpful resources available from the district and council. Making this connection between 120 units and hundreds of volunteers takes a significant effort and time commitment, and these two folks did a creditable job taking on the task. We look forward to their continued service.
Where there were two, now there is one. We are fortunate that Randy Hill has very willingly agreed to serve as the District Commissioner for Greenwood. As you know, Randy has most recently been Round Table Chairman, and brings a wealth of Scouting leadership experience to our efforts. He has a big task ahead of him recruiting and training his Commissioner Staff and reaching out to serve the needs of our units. Please lean on him for support, and say “yes” when he calls upon you for some help!
February 8 is a big day for all of us who wear the Scout uniform – the 100th birthday of the Boy Scouts of America! I don’t know if there is any other organization that has been doing what we do for as long or as well in providing a value-oriented program for youth. Having recently participated on an Eagle Board of Review, I have to be impressed with the quality of young men who are taking advantage of what our program has to offer – and who will no doubt be contributing citizens to our society. We can all take a great deal of pride being part of the BSA.
Happy Birthday, Scouts and Scouters of Greenwood!
