What is A.C.T. ~ Class Descriptions ~ Registration

What is:  A.C.T. 2010 - Program Development Conference?

Building on the foundation of Cub POW-WOW, Boy Scout Potlatch, University of Scouting and an Adult version of “Scout Show and Do” we have expanded this year to offer more opportunities for ALL adult leaders. All Adult Leaders including Commissioners will find workshops relevant to their program, as well as many classes that work for all programs.  Participants will be able to select up to four 90 min. sessions to attend and can select from any of the classes regardless of the program in which they are registered. 

Workshops will have limited enrollment so be sure to sign up early for your first choice selections. You won’t want to miss lunch (included in registration fees) as we celebrate 100 Years of Scouting!  An exhibit hall will be open until 2:00 p.m. which will have interesting commercial and non-commercial booths.

Session 1 Classes:

CS: Cub Leader Specific Training: A Comprehensive Course (Part 1 of 2) (attend both sessions to complete training) 
This course is now offered on-line but for those who wish to take this with other scout leaders, you will benefit from the interaction with other people.  You will find that other leaders have great ideas and the youth will be better served by trained leaders.  This comprehensive course will cover all registered Cub leader positions so you will be able to move from one registered Cub position to another without going through basic training again.

CS: Blue and Gold: How to plan and present a Special Event
Learn how to plan and present a Blue and Gold Dinner that can be done on a Tuesday evening between after school activities and homework or a weekend extravaganza!  Find out where are the best places to purchase supplies to decorate and what menus work best for large groups!

BS: Scout Leader Basic:  Part 1 of 3 (attend all 3 sessions to complete training)
Since basic leader training will soon be mandatory for re-chartering, this is a great time to take the training and still have time for one other class.  Learn how leaders let the boys lead while coaching and mentoring them so they will have skills to effectively lead others.  Learn why the scouting program has been working for 100 years.

BS: Merit Badge Counseling: How, Who, What and When?
Learn how to recruit the best counselors in your units and community and what training they will need to be eligible to work with Boy Scout youth. Find out ways to get new parents involved and what merit badges are new this year.  As a counselor, discover ways to make earning a merit badge a rewarding and valuable experience for a scout.

BS: High Adventures for Boy Scouts and Venturing: National Camps and Fun Things Troops can Do
Discussion will include the 3 and now 4 National Camps and what is offered in their programs.  Information about the new Summit Camp in West Virginia will be introduced. This will be an opportunity for you to find out many different adventures that troops in this council have done locally and afar, and how they went about planning, training and funding these memories.

AP: On Line Training: How to Log in and Take Required Training
Have us help you navigate the on-line training opportunities which include the “Fast start”, “This is Scouting”, “Youth Protection” and in some cases “Leader Specific”.  Find out what supplemental trainings are offered and how easy it is to get training in your own home.

AP: Leather Working: Skill Building Ideas and Suggestions for Age Appropriate Activities
What makes a young person develop a sense of pride?  A “I made that myself” statement.  Learn how this skill can be taken back to your units and developed into a lesson on character, and self esteem.  Participants will be able to make something themselves in this class in order to send home this message.

 

AP: Scout Outings : Intro. Wilderness 1st Aid, Tour Permits ,Med. Hist., Insurance., Training & Planning Tips
So you want your unit to be active, the youth to have fun and avoid a few moments of potential panic? This class will focus on preparing your unit for safe trips, including an introduction to the Wilderness 1st Aid class.  There will be discussion on the paperwork, training needed and ideas on how to plan for a trip and what things one should take and what to leave behind.

 

AP: Introduction to Leave No Trace Front and Back Country: An Overview
LNT is an outdoor ethics program that teaches techniques visitors can use to help reduce evidence of their presence in the front and back country. The instructors will give examples of what can be done and what impact the scouts have in helping preserve our environment.  Find out how much you know and what you can learn and take back to your units.

 

UC: Commissioners-Basic Training: Part 1 of 2

So you have been asked to be a Unit Commissioner and now you want to do a great job. By taking Basic Leader Training (or even reviewing Basic Leader Training) you will rekindle the reason you joined the scouting program in the first place.  You saw a good thing and stuck with it and now it is time to support the new leaders like you were supported.  You don’t want to miss this opportunity to share with others in our council.

CS: CUBS 2010-The New Program Plus Managing the Academics and Sports Program:
The Cub program has made changes in how it is delivered and this is where you will find out how it is done.  Find out how the Academics and Sports program works with what the youth  are doing and how this follows the progression into Boy Scouting.  You do not want to miss out on what is new and exciting!

CS: Games and Gatherings: Off the Cuff and Structured Fun
What do you do with a “herd” of young boys before a structured meeting and during it as well? You will learn skills in how to follow Baden Powell’s belief that Scouting is a game with a purpose.  Participants will leave this course with samples and examples of what to do and will have fun themselves!

BS: Back Country Cooking: Healthy and Light Weight Foods/Dehydration
Learn to create balanced menus and inexpensive backcountry meals.  Participants will learn how to dehydrate food, determine quantities for large and small groups and how to repackage food safely. Storage and preparation techniques will be presented and vegetarian menus will be introduced as well.  Back pack stove cooking will be discussed as well.

BS: Life to Eagle & Eagle Courts of Honor: Coaching Youth and Planning
Come get the nuts and bolts of the Eagle projects.  This course will cover suggestions on where scouts can look for projects, how to walk them through the details of planning their projects, project write ups and the process for approval.  Coaching and Mentoring skills will be discussed and ideas for Eagle Courts will be presented.

V: Introduction to Venturing Basic Leader Training: An Overview
Learn how Venturing works and how it relates to the troop.  See how the program strengthens the troop and how it gives youth additional challenges including more opportunity for leadership experiences.  Find out how the program works for interested females who wish to join crews and how the program has developed over the last 10 years.

 

AP: Scouting with Special Needs: Guidelines for Successful Interaction
This class is one that all scout leaders should take. Increasing our knowledge base and understanding scouts with behavioral and physical disabilities is important for us to work with our youth.  Scouts need to learn from adults how they are to interact with all members of their units.

 

AP: LDS-Let’s Do Scouting: How the Scout Program supports the priesthood in LDS units
This is a class for LDS scout leaders to meet each other from Stakes across the council and see what other units are doing.  There are some very active units that have provide their youth many leadership opportunities.  Three LDS scout leaders will be leading this discussion.

CS: Pack Management: Budget, Advancement, Record Keeping, Fund Raising, Calendar:
Yes, this class is for you!  Learn how to run a successful Cub Pack by starting with the Calendar. When you leave this class you will be confident and excited to know how to fund the activities you have planned, be organized in how to record advancement and understand how to submit paperwork.  You will find out there is more than one way to get the same results!

CS: Songs, Skits, Sparklers, Ceremonies: How to Make Pack Meetings Fun
Pep up your pack meetings with audience participation, run-ons and applauses. Learn to use simple props, costumes, lighting and music to create magic moments.  Learn how to use ceremonies to build lasting memories that the entire family can enjoy.

BS: How to Teach Dutch Oven Cooking: Have Fun while Eating Well
This course will knock you into another orbit.  Find out how to teach Dutch oven cooking and how much fun it can be when you decide that anything can be cooked in that funny black pot. Learn how to select, prepare and maintain an oven and how to teach your youth to have fun, while learning that they can eat well while camping.

 

BS: Games and Gatherings: Games with a Purpose
What happens when you have “down time”, limited resources, space and boys get bored?  Come find out what you can do in those unexpected moments and how to have activities that one can just join as they show up.  Learn how to help youth plan games so that they develop skills that will help them learn the principals of scouting.

 

BS: Campfire Programs for Large and Small Events: Techniques that Work
Every scout has a campfire memory so this course is designed to ensure that it is inclusive and fun. Identify resources to liven up any campfire by using showmanship, stunts, songs and stories.  Learn to use simple props to enhance performances and how to avoid and deal with inappropriate behavior.

 

AP: Duty to God: Religious Emblems, Scout’s Own and Responsibilities of the Chaplain’s Aid  

A scout is reverent toward God. He is faithful in his religious duties and respects the beliefs of others. Learn about the Religious Emblems program, how to conduct a Scout’s own and what the role of the Chaplain’s Aid does to help scouts understand the 12th scout law.

 

AP: Knots and Lashings: Teaching skills Beyond the Checkmark for Advancement

When a scout leader who has written a book on knots and a 5 minute tower specialist and a gadget making funny guy get together how could you “knot” have fun? This class will help you take back the concept that these are lifelong skills that need weekly practice. Take this class and you will find out ways to integrate this skill into your weekly meetings, and have fun too.

 

AP: Geo Caching and GPS: How to Navigate Successfully with all ages of Scouts

Wow, what a fun and exciting activity to learn and a great opportunity to get outdoors! Come learn what this is all about and join in on the fun in learning how to find a cache. This class will fill up quickly so if you don’t get in this year, we definitely will have it again next year.

 

UC: Providing Commissioner Service - Unit Visitation, Priorities, Unit Lifesaving: An Overview

Your Council Commissioner would like for all unit commissioners to attend this class as this is a composite of many classes that could be offered. Wearing the Commissioner’s patch carries a tremendous responsibility and serving units the job description. By taking this class there will be many suggestions and examples of what can be done to help you effectively support your unit’s leaders and help them as they work with their youth.

 

 Session 4 Classes

CS: Derbies: Pinewood, Space, Rain Gutter Regatta and More

Come see and learn the secrets how to stage a Pinewood Derby and how to maximize fun, participation, promote Scouting values and positive competition. Get ideas on how to run a Space Derby and Rain Gutter Regatta. Participants will get to race their own Banana Cars!

 

CS: Cub Outdoor Program and Family Camping: Planning Successful Fun Events

Learn how to plan a fun and safe outdoor program, where to go and what to do when you get there. Get the rules and paperwork associated with an outing and learn more about BALOO training. Find out how Leave No Trace applies to Cubs and how Cubs can earn the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity award.

 

BS: Troop Management: Budget, Advancement, Record Keeping, Fund Raising, Calendar

You start out with a plan and that gets written on the calendar and you go from there. There are many ways to run a troop but the basic principals are the same. Learn how advancement records are kept, how to raise money for activities and outings, how to keep accurate records and how to budget for a great program. There are many ways that work and so find out how!

 

BS: Scoutmaster Conferences and Boards of Review:  How to run them Effectively

When you finish this course you will know the true meaning of the Scoutmaster conference. Learn techniques in how to conduct one when the need occurs and how it impacts the advancement process. Learn what questions to ask while serving as a board member, this can help scouts grow. Learn how to recruit and mentor adults in your troop to serve on boards.

 

AP: On My Honor: Scouting Pride and Respect, Uniforms, Flags, Ceremonies

Tuck in your uniform and join in on a great discussion about pride, respect and what it means to be a scout. Discussion will include how to develop the sense of honor in regards to personal appearance, flag etiquette and how ceremonies play an important role in building lasting memories of special occasions.

 

AP: District Events: Resources for Chairmen beyond  the “Notebook” 

So you said “yes” to chairing an event and they handed you a notebook. You read the notebook and attend this class because you will learn that this event is happening in other districts too. What a great way to share and learn new ideas on how others do the very same thing? There are many ways of doing the same thing. Come share and learn from others.

 

AP: Wood Carving: 
        Spare Time Activities, Functional Gadgets, Masterpiece Art Work

What do you get when you enter a room with a master carver from our community, a guy with a neckerchief slide collection that is out of this world and a guy who knows all the scout safety rules (and works a lot with wood and tools himself)? You get to take home your own spoon and a lot of knowledge on how to teach youth lifetime skills!

 

AP: Gearing Up for Boy Scouts: 
        Webelos Transition, New Scout Program, 1st  Summers

This class is for leaders who want to learn how help youth transition from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts. Preparing the Webelos and working with them as they move into a Boy lead troop will be addressed, as well as helping parents make the transition. There are many different ways that a troop can manage this and several ideas will be introduced.

 

AP: Youth Protection

This class is for EVERY leader who has not had Youth Protection Training in the last two years. Youth Protection is REQUIRED by the BSA for ALL registered positions including Merit Badge Councilors. You can NOT register or RECHARTER without this important course being current in your record.

 

AP: Rechartering for 2011 - Planning for ease and success 

This class is for leaders who are responsible for the rechartering process in their unit. Learn all the tips & tricks to make this year’s recharter the easiest and most accurate ever.
